Harry Clarke (1889–1931) was an Irish stained glass artist and illustrator whose works were the subject of both controversy and acclaim. His incredible colours, decorative designs and beautiful medieval-style figures have rarely found an equal in the medium of stained glass.  Many of his stained glass windows can be found in churches throughout Ireland

 

Day 1 – Arrive Shannon airport and meet your driver/ guide in the Arrivals Hall. Your trip begins with a stop at Thoor Ballylee, also known today as Yeats’ Tower. In 1916 Yeats purchased the property because he was so enchanted with it and especially as it was located in a rural area. It satisfied his desire for a rooted place in the countryside. Day 2 – Today begin your discovery of the genius of Harry Clarke. Visit St Mary’s in Ballinrobe to view “The Immaculate Conception” window and then on to The “Last Judgment” window at St. Patrick’s, Newport, described as “a complete revelation in stained glass”. All the while traveling through the dramatic scenery of Mayo. Perhaps a stop along the way at  the Céide Fields, the oldest known field systems in the world, over five and a half millennia old. It is a unique Neolithic landscape of world importance, which has changed our perception of our Stone Age ancestors.Overnight: Knockranny House Hotel, Westport

Day 3 – Today you could visit St Michael’s church Ballinastoe and see the window of” St Patrick & St Rose of Lima”  and the surrounding area which is rich with choices of Harry Clarke windows.  Perhaps a visit to Clonmacoise an ancient monastic site near Shannonbridge, County Offaly. Arrive, Limerick late afternoon. Day 4 – Dingle Peninsula, the westernmost point of Ireland and arguably Europe, has  suffered the Vikings, welcomed Hollywood and its most famous local is a dolphin.   It is also home to six of Harry Clarke’s stained Glass windows at Díseart.  The windows have  been described as “breathtaking”, “magnificent” and “intensely moving”  Perhaps also a stop at The Dingle Brewing Company nestled at the base of Conor Pass. They have a lager named after Tom Crean an Irish seaman and Antarctic explorer, certainly worth a try! Day 5 – Travel the breathtaking southern coast of  Ireland  to the attractive village of Castletownshend situated on the coast, to view” The Nativity” window on the east wall of the beautiful church of St. Barrahane.  Continue on to Kinsale one of the most picturesque, popular and fashionable resorts of the south-west coast of Ireland. Walking around the town of Kinsale you can enjoy browsing in its many shops, for gifts, crafts, paintings, locally designed fashions, art galleries, book shops or take time out in one of its many lovely café’s for coffee and cakes. Winding along the many little streets in Kinsale, is a delight.  Than on to Cork, the “Venice of Ireland”  . Set in two acres of gardens, Hayfield Manor has the feel of a large period house. Day 6 –  A visit to Honan Chapel which is home to eight Harry Clark Stained Glass windows. These magnificent windows were central in building a solid reputation for Harry Clarke’s skilled craftsmanship and originality .Time permitting a  visit the famed English Market, which has been trading since 1788.  Traveling to Dublin today you can choose between a stop in Ballylooby to see the” Beheading of St. John the Baptist.”The lancet depicts Salome carrying the head of Saint John the Baptist on a platter, watched by King Herod and his courtiers, or  a stop at the rock of Cashe   one of the most remarkable collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture to be found anywhere in Europe. Day 7 – As you stroll through Dublin today you could stop at Brewley’s Oriental Café on Grafton for a different style of Harry Clarke art, butterflies, and sea creatures. And if you have had your fill of stained glass, Dublin has many other wonders to offer. Day 8 – Make your way to Dublin Airport with time to spare for last minute shopping at the Duty Free. Bid farewell to the Emerald Isle and board your airline for home.
